Help the Gilutongan Island Community

Gilutongan Island, Cordova, Cebu, Philippines is home for a fishing community of almost 2,000 people.

The community on Gilutongan Island has already been struggling with their normal day-to-day needs. Now, Typhoon Odette destroyed much of what people there have been working hard for. The typhoon has affected over 400 families. Out of around 250 boats, only 3 functional boats are left. There is no electricity and hardly any access to drinking water.

We ask you to contribute towards immediate relief for the island community.

Who We Are

We are budding energy access researchers from the University of San Carlos, Cebu. Gilutongan Island has been the site of our field work where we install Solar Photovoltaics. We have grown to love the community in the process. We recognize that building capacity entails both providing power (electricity) and empowerment. Typhoon Odette came unexpectedly. We have tried to help the community concerning their emergency needs from our own pockets, but what we have so far is still not enough and so we need your help.

FAQs

There are other people asking for donations for the Philippines. Why should I donate here?

Typhoon Odette affected many Filipinos in Visayas and Mindanao. The calamity is widespread. We also recognize the urgent needs of other communities in these parts of the country.

Unfortunately, the community in Gilutongan Island is small and remote. Relief operations rarely reach it. If you donate here, you can make a big impact that is specifically directed to a community that you know is often neglected.

How can I ensure that my donation will reach the community?

As soon as we received your donation, someone from our group will get in touch with you to confirm this. We just ask for your patience because we have also lost electricity and are experiencing limited internet connectivity.

We will buy the groceries ourselves, pack them ourselves, and distribute them to the community ourselves.

We will also post updates on the total amounts we are collecting and pictures of relief operations you are funding, through this website.

Will my donation contribute to sustainable development?

Your donation will primarily go to the community's immediate and urgent needs. Our group, even before the COVID-19 Pandemic and Typhoon Odette, has been working towards SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) 7, which is affordable and clean energy. Right now, pursuing this longer term goal is very difficult, if not impossible, if the basic needs of the community remain unaddressed. Your help at this point is crucial. It can enable the community to eventually progress from survival to development.
